The Columbus, Ohio, community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Theodore “Teddy” Corey, the 2-year-old son of nonprofit leader Michael Corey, who died several days after sustaining critical injuries in a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 670. Teddy’s passing has left his family, friends, and the broader community devastated, while an outpouring of prayers and support continues for Michael Corey as he recovers from serious injuries suffered in the same collision.
According to the Columbus Division of Police, the crash occurred at approximately 8:47 a.m. on July 15 on Interstate 670 West near mile marker 6, before the Interstate 270 North and Stelzer Road exit. Investigators said four vehicles were involved in the collision.
Preliminary findings indicate that traffic in the left lane had slowed due to congestion when a 2016 Toyota 4Runner struck the rear of the Honda Accord driven by Michael Corey. Police allege the SUV’s driver, Daniel Raffe-Ocando, 31, of Columbus, was traveling at highway speed, following too closely, and briefly looked away from the road at his vehicle’s touchscreen before realizing traffic had stopped. The impact pushed the Accord into another vehicle, which then struck a fourth vehicle, creating a chain-reaction crash.
Emergency responders transported Michael Corey in critical condition to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center, while Teddy was rushed in critical condition to Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Despite the determined efforts of doctors and medical staff, Teddy passed away on July 19.
In the midst of overwhelming grief, Teddy’s family made the extraordinary decision to donate his organs, giving hope and life to other children in need. According to the Human Service Chamber of Franklin County, where Michael Corey serves as executive director, Teddy’s organ donation has already saved the lives of at least two children, ensuring that his legacy will continue through an incredible act of generosity.
In a heartfelt statement, Teddy’s family remembered him as a joyful child whose curiosity and love for life brightened every room he entered.
“Our beloved Teddy lived in wide-eyed wonder at life itself,” the family shared.
They recalled his excitement over toy cars, his love for ice cream, and the happiness he found in spending time with those he loved. Above all, they remembered the special bond he shared with his older brother, Elijah, who filled Teddy’s life with laughter, guidance, and unconditional love.
Though his life lasted only two years, Teddy’s family said he loved deeply and brought immeasurable joy to everyone fortunate enough to know him. They expressed pride that, through organ donation, their son became “a life-saving hero to other children and families.”
