Born on January 25, 1978, in Redwood Falls, Minnesota, Craig was the cherished son of Michael and Joni (Zwach) Baune. Raised in the rural Vesta area, he grew up surrounded by the values of faith, hard work, and compassion. Those principles shaped the course of his life and earned him the respect and admiration of everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Craig attended school in Milroy before graduating from Marshall High School in 1996. He later pursued his passion for building and craftsmanship at Minnesota West Community and Technical College in Pipestone, where he earned a degree in carpentry in 1998. For the next 15 years, he built a reputation as a skilled and dependable construction professional, admired for his attention to detail and strong work ethic.
In 2013, Craig returned to the Milroy area to embrace another lifelong passion—farming. Working the land brought him immense fulfillment and allowed him to reconnect with the traditions and rural lifestyle he treasured. Friends and family remember him as someone who took pride in every day’s work and approached every challenge with determination and perseverance.
Above all, Craig was a devoted father to his son, Ty. Since Ty’s birth in 2005, fatherhood became the center of Craig’s life. He treasured every opportunity to spend time with his son, creating memories that will forever remain in the hearts of those who witnessed their close bond. His love for his family was evident in everything he did.
Outside of work, Craig enjoyed restoring and repairing four-wheelers and other engines, combining his mechanical talents with his love of hands-on projects. He also enjoyed target shooting and collecting firearms, hobbies he often shared with family and close friends. Equally well known was his passion for cooking. Whether smoking meats or preparing meals for gatherings, Craig found joy in bringing people together around the table. His generous hospitality ensured that every guest felt welcomed and cared for.
Those who knew Craig describe him as a selfless and dependable man who never hesitated to help others. Whether assisting a neighbor, supporting a friend, or volunteering his time, he consistently placed the needs of others before his own. Even after his passing, his compassion continued through the donation of his tissues, a final act of generosity that will help improve the lives of others.
Craig is lovingly remembered by his son, Ty Craig Baune of Minneota; his parents, Mike and Joni Baune of rural Vesta; his grandparents, Roman and Shirley Baune of Redwood Falls; his brother, Brian Baune of Fargo, North Dakota; his sister, Kristi Baune (Tyler Olson) of Minneapolis; his nieces and nephews, Adrianna, Zane, and Nash Baune; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Henry and Leah Zwach.
