The communities of Republic and Springfield, Missouri, are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Josie Johns, a beloved 12-year-old student-athlete whose passing on Friday, July 10, 2026, has left family, friends, classmates, teammates, teachers, and coaches devastated. Remembered for her bright smile, determination, and compassionate spirit, Josie made a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know her despite her young age.
Josie was a sixth-grade student who attended McCulloch Elementary and was part of the Pershing Middle School Class of 2032. She was known throughout her school community as a hardworking student, a supportive friend, and an outstanding young athlete whose enthusiasm inspired those around her.
Following the tragic news, Republic School District shared a heartfelt message expressing sympathy to Josie’s family and acknowledging the tremendous loss felt across the school community.
“It is with deep sadness that we write to share that Josie Johns, a student at McCulloch Elementary, passed away on July 10. Our hope is to provide information that may help children who are processing grief. We also want our school community to know that one of our families is experiencing an unimaginable loss and needs our love and support. We hold Josie’s loved ones in our thoughts during this incredibly difficult time.”
The district also made school counselors and grief support services available to students, staff, and families as classmates struggled to process the unexpected loss of one of their own.
Outside the classroom, Josie excelled in athletics and developed a reputation as one of Pershing Middle School’s most versatile competitors. During the 2026 outdoor track and field season, she demonstrated exceptional talent across multiple events, including distance running, hurdles, relays, and high jump.
One of her proudest accomplishments came at the Springfield Public Schools All-City Meet on April 22, 2026, where she earned first place in the high jump with a personal-best clearance of 1.30 meters (4 feet, 3 inches). Her achievement reflected the dedication and determination she brought to every practice and competition.
Josie also showed remarkable improvement in distance events, trimming nearly a minute from her 1,600-meter time over the course of the season to record a personal best of 6:49.51. In addition, she established a new personal record in the 100-meter hurdles and became a dependable member of Pershing’s relay teams.
Her coaches and teammates admired not only her athletic ability but also her sportsmanship and encouraging attitude. Whether celebrating a teammate’s success or pushing herself to improve, Josie consistently demonstrated maturity, humility, and a genuine love for competition.
She proudly competed alongside teammates Reagan Dickenson, Claire O’Hara, Irelynd Marler, Melinda Ellis, Emrie Hilton, Kennedy Clark, Roxy Gallagher, and Giselle Harris, forming friendships and memories that will remain treasured by those who shared the track with her.
As news of her passing spread throughout Republic and Springfield, an outpouring of love and support emerged from classmates, educators, neighbors, coaches, and community members. Many have shared heartfelt tributes remembering Josie’s joyful personality, positive attitude, and the kindness she extended to everyone she met.
Although her life was tragically cut short, Josie leaves behind a legacy defined by perseverance, friendship, compassion, and an infectious enthusiasm for life. The example she set both in the classroom and on the athletic field will continue to inspire those who knew her.
