MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Family, friends, colleagues, and classmates are mourning the tragic loss of Mackenzie Markham, a beloved Minneapolis resident and Pine Island native whose passing has left a profound void in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
At just 24 years old, Mackenzie was admired for her intelligence, compassion, and unwavering commitment to helping others. Her life was marked by academic achievement, professional promise, and meaningful relationships that touched countless people throughout Minnesota.
Originally from Pine Island, Mackenzie pursued her passion for psychology and human behavior through higher education. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Minnesota State University, Mankato, in 2024 before continuing her education at St. Cloud State University, where she completed a Master of Science in Industrial-Organizational Psychology.
During graduate school, Mackenzie distinguished herself through academic excellence and professional leadership. She was selected as an Organizational Science Institute (OSI) Fellow at the Dr. Shawn D. Long Organizational Science Institute, an opportunity that reflected both her dedication to research and her potential as a future leader in organizational development and human resources.
Following graduation, Mackenzie built an impressive career in human resources. Her professional journey included serving as a Lead Caregiver and Medpasser at New Perspective Senior Living, where she demonstrated genuine compassion while caring for elderly residents.
She later completed an internship with Crown Holdings in Owatonna, applying her knowledge of industrial-organizational psychology to talent acquisition and recruitment initiatives. Mackenzie also worked as a Talent Acquisition Specialist with Orion Associates before accepting a position in May 2026 as an Associate Human Resources Business Partner with United Natural Foods, Inc. (UNFI).
Colleagues remember Mackenzie as a thoughtful professional who combined analytical skills with genuine empathy. She was respected for her collaborative spirit, positive attitude, and willingness to encourage those around her. Whether working alongside teammates or mentoring others, she brought kindness and integrity into every environment she entered.
Outside of her professional accomplishments, Mackenzie was known for her warm personality, generous heart, and enduring friendships. Those closest to her describe her as someone who always made time for others, celebrated the successes of family and friends, and approached life with optimism and compassion.
Her loved ones also remember the happiness she found in her relationship with her partner, Jess-Alec Burakeye. Together they built a life centered on mutual encouragement, shared dreams, and unwavering support.
The news of Mackenzie’s passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from classmates, professors, coworkers, and friends who continue to share stories of her kindness, intelligence, and lasting impact. Mackenzie is survived by her loving family of Pine Island, her partner Jess-Alec Burakeye, relatives, friends, former classmates from Minnesota State University, Mankato and St. Cloud State University, and colleagues at UNFI, Orion Associates, Crown Holdings, and New Perspective Senior Living.
Funeral and celebration of life arrangements will be announced by her family in the coming days.
