The Jackson, Tennessee, community is mourning the unexpected passing of Marcia Moss, a revered educator, former Miss Tennessee, devoted Christian, and dedicated member of the Jackson-Madison County School System (JMCSS) Board of Education. She passed away on Saturday, July 18, 2026, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of faith, education, and community service that spanned more than four decades.
Mrs. Moss was widely recognized throughout West Tennessee as an inspiring teacher, compassionate mentor, and tireless advocate for students. Her influence extended far beyond the classroom, touching the lives of thousands of young people, fellow educators, and community leaders who benefited from her wisdom, kindness, and unwavering commitment to academic excellence.
Born and raised in Paris, Tennessee, Marcia graduated from Grove High School before earning statewide recognition in 1965 when she was crowned Miss Tennessee while representing her hometown as Miss Paris. Although the title brought her public acclaim, those who knew her best say her greatest calling was education, where she devoted her life to helping young people discover their potential.
Mrs. Moss enjoyed an accomplished teaching career that lasted nearly 40 years. She spent 27 years teaching Life Science and Biology at the University School of Jackson (USJ), where she became one of the institution’s most respected and beloved educators. Her engaging teaching style, passion for science, and genuine care for her students inspired countless young people to pursue careers in medicine, science, education, and other professions.
Her dedication to education also included service within the Jackson-Madison County School System and the Crockett County School System, as well as teaching remedial courses at Jackson State Community College. Throughout every stage of her career, she remained committed to helping students overcome challenges and achieve success, believing every child deserved encouragement and the opportunity to reach their full potential.
Even after retiring from full-time classroom teaching, Mrs. Moss continued serving the community she loved. In 2023, she was appointed to represent District 3 on the Jackson-Madison County School Board, where her decades of firsthand classroom experience brought valuable perspective to educational leadership. As a board member, she consistently advocated for student achievement, teacher support, and policies that strengthened learning opportunities across the district.
Board Chair Harvey Walden remembered Mrs. Moss as an exceptional leader whose experience as a longtime educator enriched every discussion and decision made by the board. Fellow board member Andre Darnell Sr. also paid tribute to her, remembering her unwavering faith, love for students, and lasting commitment to serving the Jackson community.

The Jackson-Madison County School System and the University School of Jackson have extended their condolences to the Moss family and honored her extraordinary contributions to education and public service.
