According to investigators, two suspects arrived at the location before opening fire on Mitchell with a handgun. Emergency medical personnel quickly transported him to a nearby hospital, but despite lifesaving efforts, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
The Niagara Regional Police Service has confirmed that the investigation is being led by its Homicide Unit and remains active. Detectives have obtained surveillance images of both the suspects and the vehicle believed to have been used during the incident.
Police have identified the suspect vehicle as a white 2022–2026 Nissan Rogue SUV and are urging members of the public to help identify the occupants or provide any information that could assist the investigation.
Investigators describe the first suspect as a male between 25 and 35 years old, approximately 5 feet 6 inches tall, with a slim build and dark skin. He was reportedly wearing a white T-shirt, dark-colored pants, sunglasses, and a red bandana.
The second suspect is described as a female between 18 and 25 years old, with dark brown hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing baggy blue sweatpants, a gray hooded sweatshirt, and white shoes.
Authorities believe the pair fled the area immediately after the shooting in the white Nissan SUV.
Detectives are asking anyone who was in the area of Thorold Stone Road around the time of the shooting to review dash camera footage or surveillance recordings for any sighting of the vehicle or individuals matching the descriptions. Even seemingly minor details could prove crucial to the investigation.
Police have stated that the shooting appears to have been a targeted incident, but they caution that the suspects remain at large and may still be armed. Officers continue to examine surveillance footage from nearby homes and businesses while pursuing additional leads.
