MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — A large fight during a public soccer watch party at North Loop Green in downtown Minneapolis sparked widespread panic Sunday evening, sending hundreds of attendees fleeing after false reports of gunfire spread through the crowd.
According to authorities, multiple law enforcement agencies responded after receiving numerous 911 calls reporting possible shots fired at the event. Officers quickly secured the area and investigated the reports, later determining that no gunfire had occurred.
Police said the incident began with a large brawl involving multiple individuals attending the watch party. As rumors of an active shooting circulated through the crowd, many spectators rushed to escape, resulting in a chaotic stampede.
Officials reported that at least three people suffered injuries after being knocked down and trampled during the evacuation. Authorities said the injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, and those affected received medical attention.
Witnesses described scenes of confusion and fear as people ran in different directions, believing their safety was at risk.
“People thought there were shots, everybody started running. Turns out it was fights. They eventually shut the game off and evacuated everyone,” one witness said.
Event organizers suspended the soccer watch party and evacuated attendees while law enforcement officers worked to secure the area and confirm there was no ongoing threat to the public.
Police remained at the scene Sunday evening gathering evidence, reviewing witness accounts, and investigating what led to the altercation. As of the latest update, authorities have not announced any arrests or released information about those believed to have been involved in the fight.
Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has photos, videos, or additional information to contact law enforcement as the investigation continues.
Although the reports of gunfire proved to be unfounded, the incident serves as a reminder of how quickly misinformation can spread during large public gatherings, creating panic and increasing the risk of injuries.
The investigation remains active, and additional details are expected to be released as authorities continue to determine the circumstances surrounding the disturbance.
