The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is mourning the loss of former U.S. Congressman Tim Murphy, who died on Sunday at the age of 73. A longtime public servant, psychologist, educator, and military officer, Murphy is being remembered for his decades of service to the people of Pennsylvania and his enduring efforts to reform mental health care in the United States.
Murphy, a Republican and longtime resident of Upper St. Clair, served Pennsylvania’s 18th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives after first being elected in 2002. Before his tenure in Congress, he represented constituents in the Pennsylvania State Senate from 1997 to 2003. News of his passing was announced by the Republican Committee of Allegheny County. Throughout his 15 years in Congress, Murphy became widely recognized as one of the nation’s leading advocates for mental health reform. His signature legislative achievement was the Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act. Before entering politics, Murphy built a distinguished career in psychology and education. He taught at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and later served in the U.S. Navy Reserve Medical Service Corps, demonstrating a commitment to serving both his community and his country.
Murphy’s congressional career came to an end in October 2017 when he resigned following revelations of an extramarital relationship and allegations involving private communications that conflicted with his public anti-abortion stance. Former Congressman Conor Lamb, a Democrat who succeeded Murphy in representing the district, acknowledged Murphy’s lifelong commitment to public service, highlighting his decision to join the U.S. Navy Reserve after the September 11 attacks as an example of his dedication to serving others.
Pennsylvania Senate Minority Leader Jay Costa also reflected on their bipartisan collaboration, recalling opportunities to work together on issues such as expanding access to early childhood education despite political differences.
Longtime journalist and Allegheny Institute communications director Colin McNickle praised Murphy’s unwavering commitment to improving mental health services, describing that work as a legacy that will endure for years to come.
